Autumnal Gardening and Repairs That are a Must at This Time of Year

Brrrr, the colder temperatures are here, and the age old question remains: when do you put your heating on? But as the temperatures are dropping, it means that there is some work to be done outside, if you have a patio or garden space, so that autumn and winter don’t take over and leave you with a lot of work to do in the spring. As well as clearing the fallen leaves that will be arriving in abundance right about now, there are lots of other simple things that you can do that make a big difference to the look and quality of your garden. Plus, this time of the year can be a good time for wildlife in your garden, like hedgehogs and so on. So here are some tips to make sure that you can take care of your garden, and that you can look after the wildlife that is looking for a home this autumn and winter.

Easy Ways To Keep Your Home Warm All Through Winter

hen this time of year rolls around, we all start to focus on ways we can keep warm over the winter. We invest in warm boots, new scarves and sometimes even thermal underwear (arguably the most attractive garments that have ever existed). But how exactly do you make sure that your own home stays cosy all through the colder months? Here are some tips.
Add Insulation To Your Attic
We all know how important it is to wear a hat during the winter, because a huge amount of your body heat escapes through your head. The same is true of your home - if your loft or attic isn’t fully insulated, you’ll end up losing a lot of heat through your roof. This will push your heating bills to astronomically high levels, and you’ll end up wasting a lot of money. One option is to hire someone to add insulation to your loft, but you can also buy it from any hardware store. You can add insulation to your floor if you don’t use your loft but you can also attach it behind your rafters if you want to insulate the actual roof.

Five Ways You Can Prepare Your Home For Winter

The summer is finally over, and we’re finally edging into autumn. It’s a beautiful time of year as the leaves fall from the trees and turn glorious shades of crimson and orange, but it’s also the time when you need to make sure that your home is fully prepared for the colder weather ahead. Here are some tips that will help you make sure that your house is fully winter-proofed.

Check Your Boiler
First, you need to get your boiler serviced. You should do this every year, but it’s particularly important to make sure that it’s running well before winter begins. Not only is it extortionately expensive to replace a boiler (this is what that rainy day fund is for), but it’s also incredibly uncomfortable to go through the winter without heating or hot water. If your boiler isn’t working properly during autumn, you can shudder and complain your way through a cold shower. If it’s off during the winter, you’ll feel as though your entire body has turned into an icicle.

Is Your Home Winter-Ready?

If you are starting to feel the chill a little, you might be thinking already about whether or not your home is likely to be a suitable place to be during the colder parts of the coming months. If you live somewhere where you get particularly cold winters, it might be that you are more used to it, and as such you will be more prepared, but even so you will need to make sure that you're doing everything you can to truly be ready for the winter months, as they always seem to catch us by surprise. If you are not used to very cold winters, you will still need to make sure that you are ready for them in your home, so either way, this will apply. As it happens, there are a few things, in particular, you might want to do to make sure that you are ready for winter. Let’s take a look at them now and see what they might be.

Getting Winter Ready

With all this bad weather we're having at the moment, it makes me realise just how unprepared I am for it. Thankfully we are not completely unprepared, we have a snow shovel and gritting salt, but they're not always easy to find in a garage that's over flowing with so many other things. Every time we get snow I say we need to be more prepared. But by time we get round to doing anything about it the snow has gone and we forget we need to get organised and move onto something else. But we are now on day 6 of snow and are set for more next week.

It's crazy how everything comes to a stop the moment we get a bit of snow, when other counties cope with it for weeks and months on end. But that's just it we don't have it for very long so never feel the need to put measures in place to cope with it. I'm certainly not about to go out and buy new winter tyres, as no doubt we'll have spring type weather in a couple of weeks, that's just how it is here in the UK.
