The New Home Blues And How To Get Past Them

When we first decide to move home, it’s exciting. It’s a chance for a fresh start and a blank canvas. What’s not to love about that? That excitement stays put during the house hunt. Possibilities are still endless, and you get the chance to nose around other people’s homes. But, once offers are finalised, and dates agreed, something strange often happens. That excitement which has been propelling you dies down, and you’re left feeling ...blue? The excitement of new possibilities is replaced with the crushing realisation of what you’re leaving behind. How can you leave the home you built and the friends you have? What were you even thinking?

First, remember that this is normal. Big changes are frightening, and we all get a natural urge to grab hold of what we know. That’s survival instinct, and there’s no getting around it. The good news is, there are a few ways to blow those blues away. And, that’s what we’re going to look at here. These steps should get you back on the path to new-home excitement in no time.

REMOVE THE STRESS

One of the primary reasons those blues set in is stress. Let’s face it; house buying is far from easy. And, once you’ve gone through the trauma of getting your offer accepted, you have to face the reality of moving a houseful of stuff. Is it any wonder that staying put now looks like the better option? Taking the stress out of moving will go a long way towards keeping you in a positive mindset. First, organise a company like Squab removals to help you on the day. Knowing you have an easy way to transport everything will take a huge weight off. Then, ask around friends to see if anyone can help you pack the stuff in the first place!

START PLANNING DECOR BEFOREHAND

For the creative among us, the blank canvas aspect of a new home is the best part. You get to start all over again designing the whole house. While some people would roll their eyes at the prospect, we love that new possibility. As such, taking time to prepare a few design ideas before you move will keep you in a positive headspace. Forward thinking like this is essential for ensuring you don’t lose sight of what you’re doing. Plus, it’ll keep your excitement going. So, take a few pictures of the house you’re moving to, and start drawing up some plans.

DON’T FORGET TO SAY GOODBYE

As moving day draws near, you may find that you become more sentimental about your current home than ever before. All the happy memories will come flooding back, and you won’t want to go. But, you have to. Instead of dwelling on what once was, take this time to say a proper goodbye to your current house. That way, you’ll mentally close the door. Spend time in each room. Host a house cooling party as opposed to a house warming one if you want to!
