How Spending More Time in Your Garden Can Transform Your Perspective on Life

With more people than ever before spending the majority of their time indoors on a daily basis, any opportunity to get outside more frequently has potential to be a real game changer.

If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, in particular, there are all sorts of good reasons why you might want to take advantage of landscaping services to make it as appealing as possible, and to then spend as much of your time actively enjoying your garden as possible, rather than simply spending all your free time in front of the computer or TV.

Here are a handful of ways spending more time in your garden can transform your perspective on life for the better.

By bringing you more into the present moment

One of the things that most commonly afflicts people in this day and age, is a chronic inability to relax and be present in the here and now.

In fact, researchers have found that when people are in urban environments, or are constantly interacting with screens and digital devices of various sorts, brain regions that make up what’s called the “default mode network” are highly active.

In short, the “default mode network” is what generates that little voice that constantly causes us to compare ourselves with others socially, and to obsess about potential insults, missteps, or issues in our lives.

Spending time in natural environments, on the other hand, is found to relax and quieten the default mode network and to allow us to actually experience a heightened sense of peace.

A lush, green, well-tended garden is a little slice of nature – and spending more time in it might help you to relax into the present moment in this way.

By helping to reconnect you with nature and a sense of your place in the greater scheme of things

It can be easy to feel disconnected, and even isolated, when you are caught up in the constant drama of everyday life.

Between dealing with the obligations of your career, trying to achieve various goals of yours, and trying to navigate society at large, it can be difficult to maintain a sense of connection to the “greater scheme of things.”

Spending more time in your garden can help to reconnect with nature, and give you more of a direct sense of the natural tides that we all exist within –  ranging from the turning of the seasons, to things as simple as the night and day cycle that we are insulated from when we rely largely on electric lighting indoors.

Spending more time in your garden can help to remind you that you’re part of a greater whole.

By helping you to get a bit more fresh air, sunlight, and maybe physical activity

Fresh air comes with all sorts of highly significant health benefits, and sunlight does as well – with regular exposure to sunlight helping us to generate vitamin D, correctly set our circadian rhythms, and more.

Spending more time in your garden can help to get you more fresh air and sunlight, and maybe also physical activity – especially if you are gardening.
